Oxygen is required by our cells for a process called ‘cellular respiration’. This is where the cell uses sugar from the food that we eat to produce energy. To get the energy from the sugar oxygen is needed and the reason oxygen is used is because of its chemical properties. No other elements have the specific chemical properties required to do this.

Like @Catherine says, the oxygen is needed for our cells to make energy. Our red blood cells are specially designed to carry this oxygen from the lungs and around the body to the cells where it is needed. They also help remove carbon dioxide from our body. They don’t do this for other gases because they are not needed.

When we breathe air we are breathing in lots of elements – the air is made if nitrogen (78%) oxygen (21%) carbon dioxide and other elements. We only need oxygen for reasons already mentioned so when we breath in air we just take what we need (oxygen) and expel the rest when we breath out.

Oxygen is used to produce eneergy in the body. We can make energy without it, but it is hard to maintain the levels of energy we need as large multicellular creatures without it.

ALL THE CELLS REQUIRE OXYGEN FOR THE SURVIVAL AND TO CARRY OUT VARIOUS CELLULAR METABOLIC ACTIVITIES.

Since with out oxygen the COMPLETE OXIDATION will not be carried out and if the food stuffs are not completely oxidized, THE energy WILL NOT BE RELEASED.

In the ELECTRON TRANSPORT CHAIN the last complex is nothing but OXYGEN.
