Brain freeze or ice cream headache is really called sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia ……. Def easier to say brain freeze!!
It’s caused by the rapid cooling then re-warming of the blood vessels in the sinuses- this causes the nerves to send pain signals and gives you that quick freeze- as you warm back up the pain goes away. Eating ice cream slower would prevent this- but it wouldn’t be as fun……..
Brain freeze is the cooling of the facial blood vessels, as @Adelle said. Normally you can get rid of it by pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth, which causes the blood vessels to dialate.
Ok thank you, I’ve never had one, usually I get back freeze where the coldness goes down my back and it really hurts!!! Want to know what a brain freeze feels like though!!! 🙂
