When particles irritate the hairs of the cells that line the nose this causes the lungs to push air out of the mouth and nose. This is a sneeze and the point of sneezing is to try and remove the thing that is irritating you which may be a result of an allergic reaction to something or bacteria caught up in mucous. It is a means of protecting yourself from infection, but viruses like flu can use a sneeze to spread themselves to other people. You should always sneeze into a tissue, throw the tissue away and wash your hands to prevent spreading infections.
