We are immune to a disease when our body already has the antibodies available to fight that disease. Normally our body produces the antibodies itself after we have had the disease or a vaccine. Passive immunity means that someone has the antibodies but has not previously had the disease or had the vaccine. They could have got the antibodies in several ways, for example, the antibodies could be passed from mother to baby whilst in the womb.
