• Question: I read a book from the Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan which is a fictional series about Egyptian Mythology. In it, it says that the human mind goes through a couple of stages whilst asleep but I was wondering whether this is true or made up?

The human mind does go through several different stages when we sleep. First, we go into a state halfway in between being awake and being asleep which lasts for about 5-10 minutes, then we enter a slightly deeper sleep where our heart rate slows down and our muscles start to relax. We then enter what is called REM sleep, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and this is the stage where we have dreams. During REM sleep our muscles are very relaxed but our brain activity is increased, which is what causes dreams.
In one nights sleep we go through cycles of each of these stages usually 4 or 5 times.

      Yes it is true….

During sleep, we usually pass through five phases of sleep:
stages 1, 2, 3, 4, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

These stages progress in a cycle from stage 1 to REM sleep, then the cycle starts over again with stage 1.

We spend almost 50 percent of our total sleep time in stage 2 sleep, about 20 percent in REM sleep, and the remaining 30 percent in the other stages. Infants, by contrast, spend about half of their sleep time in REM sleep.
