‘Consciousness’ means to be awake and to be aware of what is going on around us.

Consciousness is basically you. It is what you experience, your sense of you. Without it, memories would feel like they happened to someone else, you would have no sense of time, ect. Without consciousness all your senses would be meaningless information, as you have nothing to connect them. It is a really complicated subject which could take hours to summerise, and is even harder to explain how it happens.
For this reason sleeping is a subconscious state, as you still have a sense of self, but you are not interacting with the outside world.

It is nothing but knowing about yourself and being aware of what you do and being aware of what is happening in the external surroundings
